In the world of agricultural mechanics, innovation is not only about performance. Style also plays a decisive role in defining the identity of a tractor. The story of the union of style and engineering comes to life inside the SAME Museum, where a special exhibition area dedicated to industrial tractor design has been set up, with a focus on the SAME Virtus project courtesy of Giugiaro Design.
In 2012 Giugiaro Design penned the style of the SAME Virtus tractor family.

SAME Virtus tractors are an example of how design and technological innovation in agriculture can come together to create a product of superlative quality in terms of both style and function.
A low-profile hood, a cab with modern, continuous forms and rounded mudguards integrated into the structure with double rear lights make Virtus tractors machines clearly built with meticulous attention to detail.
Giugiaro style can also be found in the cab of the Virtus. The materials used, the colour scheme of the interior, the generous visibility and the rational layout of all the controls make this cab a functional and comfortable working environment.
The creative process involving engineers and designers in the conception of a new tractor line is flexible and painstaking, and includes of a number of crucial steps.
- The engineers provide designers with detailed guidelines including the ‘technical volume’, a precise set of data, dimensions, constraints and specifications that the new machine must meet.
- Based on the technical instructions they receive, the designers develop a number of styling proposals in digital format. At this stage, constant discussion with the engineers to identify the most effective solution together is essential.
- Once the best design is identified, a full-scale three-dimensional model is made to assess the proportions and the visual impact of the forms in detail.
- A complete, detailed and mechanically functional prototype is then fabricated.
- This is followed by the industrialisation project: after which a new model is ready to be manufactured and sold.

With SAME Virtus, the idea takes shape of a tractor that combines technical precision and stylistic refinement, bringing industrial design into dialogue with the land and the people who work it every day.
We look forward to seeing you at the SAME Museum to discover this new exhibition area.
